Dr. Abel R. González performs gastric plication at his clinic in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Gastric plication is a new form of bariatric surgery that, like sleeve gastrectomy surgery, helps you lose weight by reducing the capacity of your stomach and reducing your food intake. But unlike sleeve gastrectomy, gastric plication requires no implants, involves no stomach tissue removal, and is reversible. In gastric plication, the stomach's capacity is reduced by about 85 percent with sutures, which are used to isolate a small portion of the stomach for carrying out digestive functions. By leaving the stomach intact, it retains its natural nutrient absorption capabilities. Though not for everyone, gastric plication offers numerous benefits and is a tremendous option for individuals considering weight loss surgery.

Gastric plication is performed under anesthesia to ensure your maximum comfort throughout the surgery. The procedure begins with the stomach being freed from the natural binding holding it in place within the body cavity. A calibration tube is then fed orally into the stomach, acting as a guide for the new shape and size of the digestive chamber. An initial fold, or plication, is created on the outer edge of the stomach to reduce its capacity, then held in place with running, non-absorbable sutures. Next, the intial plication is folded into a second plication, causing the stomach to more closely conform to the shape and size of the calibration tube. Once again, sutures hold the plication in place. Finally, the calibration tube is removed.
Recovery time after gastric plication surgery may take up to a month. For the first two weeks following surgery, your diet will be restricted to soft liquids like water, milk and juice. Next, you will be able to eat soups containing vegetables, but no carbohydrates, for two weeks. Fruit, yogurt and heartier soup are permitted in the subsequent two weeks. Next, you will be able to eat about four spoonfuls of any food you choose at any given meal, though results are best if carbohydrate and fat intake is limited. After a month, it is recommended that you engage in an hour of walking or other light exercise daily. Six months after surgery, you can resume eating anything you like, as long as caloric intake is balanced with exercise.
Depending upon your weight before gastric plication surgery, you can expect to lose between 40 and 70 percent of your excess body weight within the first year. Though the procedure has not been in practice long enough to reveal long-term results, studies show more than 75 percent of patients also experience improvements in cholesterol levels, as well as conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnea.
The risks of gastric plication are the same as other bariatric surgery procedures, and include excess bleeding, infection and injury to other organs. You can greatly reduce your risk of complications by choosing an experienced, qualified surgeon. You can also strive to lose as much weight as possible prior to the surgery to help further minimize risks. One of the practical benefits because of this is as you lose weight, your liver decreases in size, giving your surgeon more room to work.
If you are ready to take a life-changing step toward health and happiness, gastric plication may be an excellent solution. To learn more about how you can benefit from gastric plication, contact our clinic in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic today.
