Weight Loss Timeline after Weight Loss Surgery
Undergoing weight loss surgery is a great option for people who are battling morbid obesity. Slimming down to a normal BMI helps reduce the chances of major health problems down the road. That said, the team at our Santo Domingo bariatric surgery center want to stress that bariatric surgery does not have immediate results.
What to Expect After Weight Loss Surgery
Essentially, the healing and lifestyle changes of bariatric surgery will lead to dramatic weight loss results over the course of a year to two years. Regardless what bariatric surgery procedure you undergo, the weight loss will be noticeable and will occur somewhat quickly, relatively speaking. Let’s take a look at the basic timeline of weight loss following surgery. Note that it can vary from patient to patient.
First Month After Weight Loss Surgery
Approximately a week or two after your surgery, you’ll return to our bariatric surgery clinic in Santo Domingo so we can check on the progress of your healing. (You can contact us any time before this point, obviously, if you have any concerns.) In these early days and weeks of surgical recovery, you will start your new diet, which will gradually introduce more foods as time goes on. Take it slowly and follow our advice to prevent pain and discomfort.
This first month will be more about resting, recovering, and adjusting your lifestyle rather than losing weight, though you will shed between 20 to 30 pounds during this period.
Three Months After Weight Loss Surgery
You’ll visit with doctors and specialists throughout this time to check on your diet as well as your general health and recovery. Your diet should be slowly evolving as well by this point, incorporating more and different foods based on our guidelines.
At this point more rapid weight loss will likely occur, sometimes up to 60 pounds or more. You may notice some side effects as a result, which is normal. You may want to consider looking for a support group online and in your area to help with this transition in weight and lifestyle.
Six Months After Weight Loss Surgery
The checkups and weight loss will continue at this point. You should be pretty well adjusted to your new lifestyle. You’ll likely be exercising more and exercising regularly, which will contribute to the loss of weight.
A Year After Weight Loss Surgery
By the end of the first year after bariatric surgery, most patients will have lost between half to three-quarters of the weight that they will lose overall. Be sure to consult your physician with any questions you have and to continue with your healthy lifestyle.
What to Expect in the Years Ahead
By the end of two years, you should be near your total weight loss. It’s a good idea to speak with a member of our Santo Domingo metabolic bariatric surgery team about aesthetic surgery options to address loose skin, body contour, and so on. These concerns are best addressed around 18 months after your surgery.
Some patient may put on weight again in the years ahead, though it will not be enough to become obese.
