Gastric Bypass vs. Banding Procedures
Eating right and exercising regularly is a good way to keep weight off an remain healthy for many years to come. Yet this is not always a possibility for some. Genetics, injuries, hormonal changes, sedentary lifestyles, and a number of other factors can cause a person to put on excessive weight, sometimes so much that it results in morbid obesity. For this reason, it’s important to consider getting the help and counsel of a skilled Santo Domingo bariatric surgeon. Doing so can help you shed excess weight and lead a healthier lifestyle.
About Bariatric Surgery
Bariatric surgery refers to surgeries that help people lose weight through the alteration of the digestive tract. Generally this can be divided into malabsorptive surgeries, restrictive bariatric surgeries, and combine malabsorptive and restrictive bariatric surgeries. Malabsorptive surgeries will reduce the amount of calories absorbed into the body. Restrictive surgeries alter the stomach size and restrict food consumption. Combined surgeries bring the two approaches together.
When you come to our Santo Domingo bariatric surgery clinic, we can explain these different approached in more detail so you have a good understanding of what to expect.
Types of Bariatric Surgery
Generally there are two bariatric surgery options that are quite popular: gastric bypass surgery and gastric banding surgery. Let’s give both of these options a quick look so you have an understanding of both.
About Gastric Bypass Surgery
Gastric bypass surgery is essentially a malabsorptive surgery. During a gastric bypass, part of the small intestine is bypassed so that less calories are absorbed into the body. It’s actually quite common for the malabsorptive aspect of a gastric bypass to be joined with a restrictive aspect, meaning a surgical revision of the stomach size.
About Gastric Banding Surgery
By contrast, a gastric banding surgery is a bariatric surgery that involves the alteration of the stomach size. This is, then, a restrictive surgery. By limiting the size of the stomach, less food can be consumed and hence fewer calories taken in.
Weighing Your Options for Weight Loss Surgery
Both gastric bypass surgery and gastric banding surgeries have their pros and cons. The same is true of Santo Domingo gastric plication, a surgical reduction of the stomach size (hence a restrictive surgery). When you’re here for a consultation, we’ll be more than happy to go over both of these options in greater detail.
Broadly, though, gastric banding is preferred by some patients as it is easier to reverse than gastric bypass surgery. The bad in gastric banding is adjustable as well, so the stomach capacity can be altered to a certain degree as needed. That’s not to say that one is more effective in the other, of course.
