Weight Gain Risk Factors after Bariatric Surgery

September 20, 2011 @ 07:35 AM — by Dr. Gonzalez

When it comes to effective weight reduction that is both safe and effective, there is weight loss surgery. Santo Domingo bariatric surgery has helped people who are obese or morbidly obese reduce their weight and avoid major health problems down the road.

Now with this in mind, there have been some cases where people have lost a lot of weight after surgery and gradually gained some weight back. Let’s take a look at this issue right now so you can have a better understanding of what life after bariatric surgery is like. It may be best to start at the basics.

What Bariatric Surgery Is

Bariatric surgery refers to various surgical methods that are designed to reduce stomach capacity and/or calorie absorption in the body. Doing so will help reduce the weight of a patient and will involve a lifestyle change for patients as well. This is just a basic description, of course, and we’d be happy to elaborate on this at our bariatric surgery clinic if you come in for a consultation.

How Bariatric Surgery Works

There are two basic kinds of bariatric surgery. The surgery that reduces stomach capacity is known as restrictive weight loss surgery. It essentially restricts the amount of food the stomach can store and thus calories consumed. The other kind of surgery is malabsorptive, which involves bypassing part of the small intestine to reduce caloric consumption. (Malabsorptive surgery is usually performed in combination with restrictive surgery.)

How can someone gain weight after weight loss surgery?

It may seem impossible for weight gain to occur after undergoing a weight loss surgery, but life before and after bariatric surgery is more complicated than it may seem on the surface. Weight loss happens quite rapidly after surgery, and once you are accustomed to your new lifestyle and eating habits, a certain amount of weight gain will occur. This is actually normal, and the weight you gain back will only be a small fraction of the weight you initially lose.

That said, sometimes some patients gain back more weight than others, and a lot of this may have to do with lack of activity. This can be especially true if you have a job in an office and sit around much of the day. But do not fret. There are plenty of things you can do to avoid this.

How to Avoid Weight Gain After Bariatric Surgery

After you undergo Santo Domingo metabolic bariatric surgery or any weight loss surgery option, we’ll give you some guidelines and expectations for your life after surgery. Following these dietary practices and exercise suggestions will help keep weight gain after surgical weight loss in a normal range.

Mainly, you need to remember that surgery alone is not the answer. You need to stay active to keep your weight at a level that’s most desirable for you. You may find that just taking a walk everyday can work wonders for you and your needs. If anything, you may want to consider other exercise options as well, including jogging, weight training, yoga, and so on.

So I guess we can end by saying that while weight gain after bariatric surgery is possible, losing that weight isn’t impossible.
